Question 1

The crooked vegetables

Original opinion extract, written for practice.

I have bought carrots with bends, potatoes with knobs and a cucumber which appeared to be reconsidering its direction. None of them ruined dinner. What puzzles me is the suggestion that choosing them requires a special moral personality. The shop puts them in a separate box beneath a cheerful sign, as though ordinary shape were a membership rule from which these vegetables had requested exemption. I understand that size can matter when a machine must pack thousands of pieces. At my chopping board, the difficulty is less impressive. Tell me the price, tell me whether they are sound, and let me decide what fits the pan. I am pleased the food is being sold. I would be more pleased if a carrot did not need an uplifting biography before it could become soup.

Use your own words to evaluate the writer’s attitude to buying vegetables for their appearance. Give details from the extract to justify your answer.
