Question 31

The twelve pages they skip

Original opinion extract, written for practice.

Readers tell me the instruction book is difficult. I tell them the machine is complicated. There is an important distinction, although they rarely pause long enough to appreciate it. We have supplied twelve pages, two diagrams and a glossary; what more could a responsible manufacturer do? Someone who presses the largest button before reading the opening chapter has chosen impatience over understanding. I admit the diagrams use the older model’s numbering, but the difference is perfectly obvious to anyone familiar with the design. We cannot redraw everything for people who refuse to think. I want customers to succeed. They must also accept that an expert’s time is valuable, and that making every step comfortable for a beginner may be an unreasonable use of it.

Use your own words to evaluate the writer’s attitude to people who struggle with instructions. Give details from the extract to justify your answer.
