Names after the performance
Original opinion extract, written for practice.
The programme finds room for every soloist’s photograph, then folds the people who built the set into the phrase technical assistance. I know a face sells tickets more easily than a list of careful measurements. I also know that our star entered through a door somebody had spent two evenings making fit. Recognition need not mean pretending that every contribution is identical. It means describing contributions accurately enough that applause does not quietly become an account of who did the work. Let the soloists have their photographs. Give the builders their names and their actual jobs. I would rather print one less paragraph about the production’s wonderful family spirit than praise the family while leaving half of it unnamed at the back.
