Under the first cake photograph
Original opinion extract, written for practice.
Under a photograph of a lopsided first cake, someone has written: did you even read the recipe? What a small throne to build from knowing where the flour goes. The baker did not claim to be supplying a royal banquet. She said she had tried something and was pleased it had risen. We could explain how a tin’s shape affects the result. We could ask which stage was difficult. Instead, strangers compete to discover who can sound least surprised by another person’s inexperience. I like skilled people best when their skill makes them useful. If every first attempt must arrive disguised as a finished success, we shall have a very polished internet and rather fewer people willing to begin.
