The announcement in two languages
Original opinion extract, written for practice.
The station now repeats its announcements in another language. I can understand the wish to be welcoming, but my train is usually the one arriving while somebody is still translating a warning I have already heard. We are a busy station, not a language classroom. Visitors managed before; presumably they can manage again. My sister says the second announcement helps our aunt, who understands written notices better than fast speech and finds a familiar phrase reassuring. I am glad somebody benefits. I still think the system should put regular travellers first. After all, we are the people who know the place, and it seems unfair that knowing exactly what is happening should entitle us to no greater share of the loudspeaker.
