Question 11

An apology with a condition

Original opinion extract, written for practice.

I apologised immediately. If my interruption made the meeting difficult, I said, I was sorry that people had taken it badly. There was no need for the silence which followed. I had been trying to prevent a mistaken figure from reaching the final report, and accuracy matters more than the comfort of someone halfway through a sentence. Afterwards I learned that the figure was correct; I had opened last month’s file. Naturally I sent the right version round. My colleague says I have still not apologised for speaking over her. I cannot see why correcting the information does not settle the matter. We all want the report to be accurate. It would be unfortunate if an excessive concern with manners made people afraid to raise a doubt.

Use your own words to evaluate the writer’s attitude to apologising for an interruption. Give details from the extract to justify your answer.
