The letter after the name
Original opinion extract, written for practice.
I like seeing qualifications after a professional’s name. They tell me that someone has completed work which other knowledgeable people were prepared to examine. My brother calls the letters decoration and says experience is the only real teacher. I would not ask an untested stranger to design a bridge merely because he had spent years looking at them. Yet the letters do not tell me whether the person listens, recognises a new problem or notices when a familiar method is failing. A qualification is a reason to begin with confidence, not a promise that judgement can now go to sleep. I want expertise to have been tested. I also want its owner to remember that the test occurred before the particular difficulty I am bringing through the door.
