Question 2

Below the lift car

Original fiction extract.

The lift engineer opened a narrow door behind the hotel kitchen. Beyond it, a metal ladder disappeared down the wall. I had spent the week travelling between floors without thinking about this other space. Now she handed me a lamp and told me to wait on the landing while she checked below.

The shaft swallowed the little circle of light. Far beneath us, a cable wore a thin silver smile where the lamp caught it; everything around that curve remained dark. From above came a coarse iron murmur, followed by a click so neat it sounded deliberate. The engineer stopped with one boot on a rung. In the pause, the building’s ordinary noises arrived as strangers: a trolley’s distant growl, a door’s blunt clap, water whispering behind a wall. None seemed to belong to the brightly carpeted hotel I knew.

She turned the lamp towards a numbered plate and wrote something in her notebook. Her pen made a quick, dry scratch. That small familiar sound steadied me more than the ladder or the thick cable. Somewhere overhead, a guest pressed a button and waited for a door to open.
