The last trolley
Original fiction extract.
By the time we returned the final trolley, the volunteer team was weary. We had carried boxes from the old hall all afternoon, and the jokes which had filled the first hour had become short requests for water. Nobody had fallen out with anyone. We were simply glad to see an empty doorway and know that no more boxes waited beyond it. The caretaker locked up, then offered us the remaining biscuits. We ate them sitting on the low wall instead of beginning the walk home immediately.
