The rink’s coloured floor
Original fiction extract.
At the roller rink, the instructor asked us to stand still before moving. I tried, but red and green patches were already sliding beneath my skates. The floor seemed to practise the journey without me. Across the room, confident skaters passed through the colours without looking down. I held the rail and watched a blue circle arrive at my toes, disappear under them and continue towards the music. My feet had not moved. Nevertheless, I felt as though I had missed a turn which everyone else understood.
Choose one example from the extract and explain how the writer uses language to suggest the effect of the moving lights on the beginner. Use your own words in your explanation.
