The packet that stayed
Original fiction extract.
The packet of crisps moved to the end of the metal spiral and stopped. I watched it hang behind the glass, a paid-for promise refusing to become a possession. The machine displayed THANK YOU. I pressed the collection flap, though there was nothing inside. Beside the packet, a chocolate bar rested securely in its own row, looking irritatingly unconcerned. My friend went to find the station attendant. I stayed to watch the crisps, unwilling to let the machine finish the transaction simply by changing the words on its screen.
Choose one example from the extract and explain how the writer uses language to suggest the narrator’s frustration with the vending machine. Use your own words in your explanation.
