The puppy’s shortcut

Original fiction extract.

The puppy waited beneath the picnic table until everyone looked towards the photographer. Then it made an audacious leap onto the empty chair and took the longest sandwich from the tray. It did not creep away. It carried the sandwich into the centre of the lawn, directly in front of the people who had made it. My uncle stopped smiling for the photograph. By the time he reached the puppy, the bread was on the grass and the filling had disappeared. The puppy sat down as though ready for its own picture.
