The blue spade
Original fiction extract.
The toddler had two spades but wanted the blue one kept beside her even while she used the yellow one. Her brother waited to finish the doorway of their sandcastle. At last she relinquished the blue spade, holding it out by the very end of its handle. He accepted it solemnly and dug a narrow channel. When he returned it, she had begun filling a bucket with shells and no longer appeared to remember why the spade had mattered so much.
Identify a word or phrase from the extract which suggests the same idea as the words in bold:
The toddler gave up possession of the blue spade.
