The badge’s light
Original fiction extract.
The illuminated badge was supposed to shine throughout the school fair. On my lapel, its light was intermittent. It glowed for a few seconds, went dark, then returned as I moved my shoulder. My friend thought that was the intended effect. I knew the other badges stayed bright, so I took mine to the table where we had assembled them. A volunteer checked the small connection at the back. By lunchtime, my badge no longer attracted attention by disappearing whenever I stood still.
