Question 45

An unnecessary password

Original non-fiction-style practice text.

The café's menu link asks me to create an account. Before I can discover the price of soup, it would like my email address and a password of sufficient complexity to protect what is apparently a highly sensitive sandwich list.

Accounts can be useful for regular orders or saved preferences. I am trying neither. I am standing outside in the rain, deciding whether to enter. The ordinary printed menu in the window contains exactly the information the website is withholding, which makes the digital ceremony feel particularly ambitious.

Please let the soup remain public knowledge. Offer an account when it helps with something I have chosen to do. A menu should begin a possible visit, not ask me to join the organisation before I know whether I want lunch.

Assess the writer’s attitude towards the account requirement for viewing the menu. Use three details from the text to support your answer.
