The applause machine
Original non-fiction-style practice text.
The awards ceremony played recorded applause whenever a name was announced. Those of us in the hall applauded too, but the speakers were louder. A recipient crossing the stage seemed to be entering somebody else's delighted memory, conveniently available at the press of a button.
The organisers wanted each person to receive an equally warm welcome. I understand the kindness behind that aim. Some award winners had large families present; others arrived alone. But a recording which makes the living audience almost inaudible is a curious cure for unequal attention.
Ask us to applaud everybody properly. Allow the sound to be imperfect, local and real. A generous welcome should involve the people in the room, rather than supply an impressive noise which leaves them wondering whether their own hands are needed.
Assess the writer’s attitude towards recorded applause at the awards ceremony. Use three details from the text to support your answer.
