Question 4

The blank inside

Original non-fiction-style practice text.

The card had a splendidly complicated bird on the front and nothing printed inside. My friend had written only three lines. They mentioned the bus we used to miss together, a sandwich dropped in the rain and her pleasure that I was coming home. I read them more often than any carefully rhymed verse I have received.

There was no grand claim about friendship lasting forever. The message knew a few small things which belonged to us. Its uneven handwriting leaned upwards as though the last sentence was trying to reach the bird. I liked that too. A machine would have made the lines straighter without making the greeting more exact.

I am not proposing a law against printed sentiments. Sometimes another person's words help us begin. This card reminded me, though, that a greeting can be rich because it knows something, rather than because it has found a more elaborate way to say everything.

Assess the writer’s attitude towards the card’s handwritten message. Use three details from the text to support your answer.
