A garden on the roof
Original non-fiction-style practice text.
The office roof garden has acquired a remarkable reputation for somewhere which is locked three days a week. Every recruitment photograph includes its bright chairs. Every company presentation mentions access to fresh air. I have begun to think the garden is employed more regularly than most of us.
When it is open, it is genuinely pleasant. A bench faces away from the building, and eating lunch there changes the shape of an ordinary day. I am glad someone proposed it. That makes the closure notices more irritating, not less. Maintenance is necessary, but a benefit which staff cannot predictably use is a fragile thing to advertise as part of their working life.
Please give us a dependable timetable and a clear explanation when it changes. I do not need another photograph of sunlight on an empty chair. I would like to know whether I can sit in it on Tuesday.
