The chair by the shelf
Original non-fiction-style practice text.
The bookshop has one reading chair. It is neither elegant nor carefully matched to the shelves, and somebody has repaired one arm with cloth of a different colour. I would defend it against an entire catalogue of coordinated furniture.
The chair gives browsing a different pace. A person can sit with a difficult first page without pretending to compare prices. Last week, the bookseller left an older customer there while helping someone else, then returned to continue their conversation. No announcement described this as a service. The chair simply made it possible.
One chair will not make every visitor comfortable, and the narrow shop cannot become a lounge. Still, this shabby permission to pause improves the room more than another polished display would. When the owner eventually replaces it, I hope usefulness rather than the colour scheme determines its successor.
Assess the writer’s attitude towards the bookshop’s single reading chair. Use three details from the text to support your answer.
