Question 4

The souvenir sand

Original non-fiction-style practice text.

The gift shop now sells little bottles labelled with the beach's name. Inside each is clean sand and a tiny painted shell. They are charming objects, if charm is the right word for a coastline reduced to something that will stand beside a kettle. I nearly bought one myself.

Then I read that the sand came from a commercial supplier inland. This is probably sensible: hundreds of visitors removing the beach in teaspoons would not improve it. Still, the label invites a connection which the contents cannot literally provide. The bottle contains a manufactured memory of this place, assembled from something found elsewhere.

I do not demand that every souvenir pass an examination in authenticity. A painted magnet has never pretended to be the actual lighthouse. I would like the bottle to be equally candid. Call it a reminder of the beach rather than a piece of it. Its charm might survive the sentence. If it cannot, perhaps the sentence has discovered what we were paying for.

Assess the writer’s attitude towards the bottled souvenir sand. Use three details from the text to support your answer.
