The first awkward dance
Original non-fiction-style practice text.
At the first session, the dance teacher told us that looking awkward was included in the fee. I laughed with the relief of someone who had expected to pay extra for it. Around the room, several people stopped holding their arms quite so carefully.
The lesson was not careless. The teacher corrected our steps and asked us to try again. What she removed was the need to look competent before we had learned anything. By the break, I had made more mistakes in public than I usually permit myself in a month, and was eager to return after tea.
I do not yet move gracefully. I have, however, found a room where a failed attempt is treated as something to work with rather than something to conceal. That is an excellent beginning, however uneven its feet.
