The unfinished path
Original non-fiction-style practice text.
Our village's new path ends thirty metres before the bus stop. For those thirty metres, pedestrians return to the narrow road they have spent the rest of the journey avoiding. The opening ceremony's photograph was taken facing the other direction. I can understand the photographer's preference; the completed section is handsome.
It is also useful. Children no longer walk beside traffic for most of the route, and the surface is firm after rain. I helped campaign for it, and I would campaign for it again. That history does not oblige me to describe a missing final section as a minor detail. The route's purpose is to connect homes with the stop, not merely to provide an attractive length of paving.
The council says the remaining land requires another agreement. I believe it, and I want the agreement pursued. Let us celebrate the distance already gained without allowing the photograph to become evidence that the journey is complete.
