The pretend pockets
Original non-fiction-style practice text.
The jacket's pockets are excellent from a distance. Their neat flaps sit exactly where my hands expect an opening. Beneath them is an unbroken seam. The designer has supplied a picture of usefulness and left me to carry the usefulness in a separate bag.
I understand that pockets alter the line of a garment when filled. So do elbows, shoulders and most of the other inconvenient facts about a person. Clothing which remains perfect only while its wearer carries nothing has solved a narrower problem than the advertisement suggests.
Give me a proper pocket and let the outline suffer slightly. I bought the jacket to move through an ordinary day, not to remain a flat demonstration of itself. A place for a key would be a less dramatic feature than the brochure's language, but a considerably more persuasive one.
