Question 2

Ice on the old square

Original non-fiction-style practice text.

The winter festival committee planned a temporary ice rink in the old square. The drawings showed a neat white rectangle surrounded by lights. On the site itself, the rectangle had to coexist with uneven paving, working shops and the ordinary movement of the town.

A survey showed that the square sloped more than it appeared to when empty. The rink therefore needed a level supporting structure rather than a surface laid directly on the stones. Delivery vehicles could not reach the proposed position while the market stalls remained in place. Some equipment was wider than the passage originally reserved for it. The nearest suitable power connection was on the opposite side of the square, and the proposed cable route crossed a shop’s delivery entrance. The committee had allowed for hiring machinery but underestimated the work needed to connect and protect it.

The surrounding buildings created unexpected conditions. Afternoon sun reached one end of the rink while the other remained shaded. Water from a gutter fell onto the queueing area. A forecast change in temperature meant that the refrigeration supplier had to revise the operating plan. The first barrier arrangement left too little space for people putting on skates, while the storage shelves held fewer pairs than the ticket forecast assumed. Sizes returned in a disorderly pile took staff longer to issue again.

The timetable was tight. A late delivery would reduce the testing period before the advertised opening. The festival also depended on temporary staff, and training had to happen before visitors arrived rather than during the first busy session. Shops wanted to know when machinery would be moved and whether customers could still reach their doors. After the festival, equipment would have to leave before the weekly market returned. The square was not an empty drawing board. Every arrangement for the rink had to make sense within a place already doing several other jobs.

According to the text, summarise the difficulties the organisers encountered in creating the temporary ice rink.

Use continuous writing, not note form, and use your own words as far as possible. Your summary should not be more than 120 words. Up to 10 marks are available for reading and up to 5 marks for writing.
