Not the final edition

Original non-fiction-style practice text.

The school newspaper printed its first edition of the year with a blank rectangle on page four. A caption said that the sports result would appear online after the match. One reader complained that the newspaper had gone to press unfinished. The editor, Holly, showed him the printing deadline and the match schedule.

The paper had to be printed before the fixture began if it was to reach families at the evening event. Holly could either leave the result out without explanation or tell readers where and when to find it. She chose the rectangle, making the gap visible instead of pretending it did not exist. After the match, the website carried the score and a link from the edition's front page.

The next meeting still discussed whether the paper's schedule should change. Holly did not call every missing item a good editorial choice. In this case, however, the explicit gap was more helpful than a confident guess or an unexplained absence.

Explain why Holly thinks the blank rectangle is helpful to readers.
