Question 22

A page between languages

Original non-fiction-style practice text.

At the poetry evening, the programme printed each original poem beside its translation. One audience member suggested removing the originals to reduce printing costs. He could read only the translated language and assumed the other pages served nobody he knew.

The organiser asked a bilingual performer to read the first line in both versions. Several listeners noticed that the repeated sound in the original had no direct equivalent in the translation. They discussed the translator's different choice. The original page allowed people who knew both languages to follow that decision, while learners could connect unfamiliar printed words with the sounds they heard.

The organiser shortened a list of acknowledgements instead. She did not expect every reader to use every page in the same way. Keeping both texts allowed different kinds of participation and made the translator's work visible as a choice rather than an invisible replacement.

Explain two benefits of printing the original poems as well as their translations.
