The first coat
Original non-fiction-style practice text.
The mural volunteer brought a photograph of the wall after its first coat of paint. Every patch was covered, and the colour looked even on her phone. She asked the artist whether they could cancel the second afternoon of work. The artist waited until the wall was dry before answering.
In the low evening light, several joins between the old and new surfaces became visible again. The first coat had made them harder to see while wet. It had not finished the preparation for the detailed design. The artist asked volunteers to mark these places lightly and attend to them before beginning the figures.
Their photograph had recorded real progress, not a false result. The problem came from treating progress as completion. The volunteer kept both pictures: the bright wet wall and the duller dry one. Together, they reminded the team why a successful first stage could still leave work that mattered.
Use your own words to explain “treating progress as completion”.
