A longer translation

Original non-fiction-style practice text.

The translated cookery leaflet ran to eight pages. The original occupied three. When the organiser saw the draft, he asked the translator, Hana, whether she had added recipes without permission. The cover promised six dishes, and he did not want a different booklet. Hana laid the two versions side by side and showed him that the same six recipes appeared in the same order.

The original assumed that its readers owned a particular shallow pan. Hana's readers might never have seen one, so she described its shape and explained which part of the cooking method depended on it. Another recipe referred to a folded parcel by a familiar local name. In the translation, Hana had explained the sequence of folds rather than leave readers with an unexplained label. Finally, she had added a drawing where the instruction to cut along the grain could otherwise be interpreted in two different ways.

The organiser checked a recipe with someone who had not seen the original. She completed the folds correctly using the translated instructions. He agreed that the extra pages served a purpose, though the booklet would now cost more to print. Hana offered to shorten the introduction, which repeated information from the cover. She would cut repetition willingly. She would not make an instruction brief by removing the knowledge that a reader needed to follow it.

Explain, using your own words, three reasons why the translated leaflet needs more space than the original.
