The unused tickets
Original non-fiction-style practice text.
When the club raffle ended, the organiser placed the unsold tickets in a folder instead of throwing them away. The treasurer, Lin, checked their numbers against the stubs of those which had been sold. One volunteer called this unnecessary work: only a sold ticket could win a prize.
Lin explained that the club needed to show how many tickets had actually brought in money. The unsold ones accounted for the difference between the full book and the cash total. Keeping them also meant that anyone checking a winning number could see whether that particular ticket had ever entered the draw. A gap in a sequence was easier to explain when the missing paper could be produced.
She did not keep the tickets in the draw box. She marked them unused and stored them with the cash record. They had no chance of winning anything, but their numbers still belonged to the account of what the club had done that afternoon.
Give two reasons why Lin keeps the unsold tickets.
