Question 1

The empty hooks

Original non-fiction-style practice text.

The canoe club's equipment shed looked unusually tidy. Every paddle occupied a numbered hook, and a new member suggested photographing the wall for the club's website. The quartermaster, Ben, asked him to wait until the evening session returned. Six boats were still on the river, but their hooks should not have been full.

Two pairs of paddles belonged to another club which had stored them here after a joint event. Someone had hung them in the empty spaces instead of leaving them in the visitors' rack. Ben moved them and checked his loan sheet. The gaps reappeared, showing exactly which equipment was still in use. He took his photograph then. It looked less orderly, but he could use it to explain the system to newcomers. An occupied hook told him something useful only if the object hanging there was the one the number described.

Explain why Ben considers the wall more useful after some hooks are empty again.
