Beyond the certificate
Original non-fiction-style practice text.
The village cinema trained new projectionists on a practice machine. When Joel passed the final exercise, he received a certificate and expected to work alone that Saturday. The manager put an experienced operator beside him instead. Joel thought she doubted the result.
She explained that the test used familiar equipment, whereas the cinema's second projector had different controls. Saturday also involved changing between a film and a live introduction, something the exercise had not covered. Finally, a public screening required him to coordinate with the person opening the auditorium doors. A clear picture was only one part of a successful evening.
Joel completed the screening without help with the machine. His colleague intervened once, when the audience needed to wait outside during a sound check. Afterwards, the manager congratulated him and arranged another supervised shift. The certificate mattered. It established what he had already demonstrated, rather than removing the need to learn everything that remained.
Explain, using your own words, three reasons why the manager does not let Joel run Saturday’s screening alone.
