Testing the silence

Original non-fiction-style practice text.

The sound technician arrived at the studio before any of the performers. She asked the caretaker to leave the ventilation running and then recorded two minutes in the empty room. A student watching her thought the recording had failed because nobody was speaking.

The technician played it back. A low hum came from one vent, a passing delivery vehicle interrupted the middle, and a door latch clicked whenever someone entered the corridor. She marked the times of these noises. The hum could be discussed with the caretaker, deliveries could be avoided during the quietest scene, and the corridor door could be kept closed once recording began.

Later, she recorded a short stretch of room sound with everything arranged for the session. This would help her join separate takes without an abrupt change in the background. She called it a record of the room, not a record of nothing. The student began listening to the space around the words as carefully as to the words themselves.

Explain, using your own words, three ways the first recording helps the technician prepare for the session.
