Question 12

The wrong winner

Original non-fiction-style practice text.

At the toy design exhibition, visitors voted for their favourite moving model. The winning crane had attracted almost twice as many votes as the runner-up. Its designer expected the result to settle which model the school should buy for its engineering lessons.

The teacher responsible for the purchase disagreed. Visitors had seen the crane operated by its designer, not by a beginner. The exhibition had lasted an afternoon, so nobody knew how the moving parts would withstand a term of daily use. The vote also asked which model people liked best, rather than which made the principles of movement easiest to understand.

She invited a class to try three models and describe what each helped them learn. The crane still interested them, but several needed help to use it. Its designer offered to change the handles and return for another trial. He kept the audience award on his table. Winning it had not been a mistake. Treating it as the answer to a different question would have been.

Explain, using your own words, three reasons why the teacher thinks the exhibition vote is insufficient for choosing teaching equipment.
