4.2.1 Comprehension response to Text A

Comprehension response to Text A: understand the syllabus point

  1. Cambridge requirement. Comprehension task: this question requires candidates to respond to Text A.
  2. What successful performance shows. The learner applies the requirement accurately and purposefully in an unfamiliar context. Quality depends on relevant choices, developed support and clear control, not on a memorised label.
Key Idea
  • Turn the syllabus wording into an action you can demonstrate under timed conditions.

Comprehension response to Text A: a reliable method

  1. Establish the whole-text position. Identify the situation, purpose, viewpoint and progression before analysing individual words or techniques.
  2. Select and transform material. Choose only details relevant to the task. For summary or directed writing, recast ideas accurately in your own words and avoid repetition.
  3. Analyse writer's choices. Explain how diction, imagery, syntax, tone and structure shape meaning and influence the reader. Use terminology only when it clarifies the reasoning.
  4. Evaluate and connect. Test interpretations against the whole passage, distinguish fact from opinion and explain significant relationships between ideas.

Comprehension response to Text A: application and improvement

  1. Worked thinking. A strong explanation moves from a precise textual detail to its associations, immediate effect and contribution to the writer's wider purpose. Avoid comments that could apply to any passage.
  2. Diagnose the weakness. Name the precise problem, such as copied wording, unsupported inference, feature spotting, weak organisation or inaccurate expression, then revise that feature and compare the result.
Exam technique
  • For Cambridge IGCSE First Language English 0500/0990, follow the paper and option entered by your centre. Read command words, source boundaries and word guidance carefully, and reserve time to check accuracy and task fulfilment.
Common Mistake
  • Do not force a generic paragraph structure onto every task. Use the structure that makes the required thinking clearest.

A comprehension response shows that you can understand Text A and use that understanding purposefully in an unfamiliar task. You are assessed through relevant choices, developed support, accurate interpretation and clear expression, not through memorising labels.

Turn the syllabus requirement into an action: identify what the text means, select useful material, explain how it works and connect it to the task. A successful response answers the specific question; it does not simply retell the passage or list techniques.
