Sodium and chlorine both form chlorides.

Sodium reacts with chlorine to produce the ionic compound sodium chloride. The diagrams show the arrangement of electrons in a sodium atom and in a chlorine atom: Diagram of a sodium atom with three shell rings containing 2, 8, and 1 electrons represented by dots respectively, with nuclear core labeled Na; and a chlorine atom with three shell rings containing 2, 8, and 7 electrons represented by crosses respectively, with nuclear core labeled Cl.
