A student is investigating the trend in the oxidising ability of the halogens. They are provided with:

  • chlorine water
  • bromine water
  • potassium chloride solution
  • potassium bromide solution
  • potassium iodide solution
  • cyclohexane

Describe two experiments involving displacement reactions that the student could perform, using these reagents, to demonstrate that oxidising ability decreases down Group 7.

For each experiment, cyclohexane is added to the test tube and shaken.
