Iron, Fe\text{Fe}Fe, is a transition metal in the d-block of the Periodic Table.

The mineral, pyrite, contains iron disulfide, FeS2\text{FeS}_2FeS2​.

Iron can be obtained from pyrite in a three-stage process.

  • Stage 1: pyrite is roasted in air

  • Stage 2: the oxide produced is heated with carbon to form iron and carbon dioxide
