The mineral jaipurite contains cobalt sulfide, CoS\text{CoS}CoS.

Cobalt can be obtained from cobalt sulfide in a three-stage process.

  • Stage 1: jaipurite is roasted in air
3CoS+5O2→Co3O4+3SO2 3\text{CoS} + 5\text{O}_2 \rightarrow \text{Co}_3\text{O}_4 + 3\text{SO}_2 3CoS+5O2​→Co3​O4​+3SO2​
  • Stage 2: the oxide produced is heated with carbon to form cobalt and carbon dioxide
