What esters are

Esters are organic compounds that contain the functional group −C(=O)−O−-\mathrm{C(=O)-O}-−C(=O)−O−, often shortened to −COO−-\mathrm{COO}-−COO−. They form when a carboxylic acid reacts with an alcohol.
