Question 10

Clean, dry air is a mixture of several different gases.

a.

Which gas makes up the largest proportion of clean, dry air by volume?

A Argon B Carbon dioxide C Nitrogen D Oxygen

[1]
b.

The diagram below shows a laboratory set-up for evaporation, which is part of the crystallisation process used to obtain pure crystals of copper(II) sulfate from a solution.

A crystallization setup with an evaporating basin on a water bath heated by a Bunsen burner

These sentences describe the steps in the experimental method for carrying out this crystallisation, but they are in the wrong order.

  • P: Heat the solution in the evaporating basin to evaporate some of the water until a saturated solution is formed.
  • Q: Leave the hot, saturated solution to cool slowly so that crystals of copper(II) sulfate begin to form.
  • R: Pour the copper(II) sulfate solution into the evaporating basin.
  • S: Filter the mixture to separate the crystals from the remaining cold liquid.
  • T: Dry the crystals by gently patting them with filter paper.

Put a letter in each box to show the correct order of the steps. One has been done for you.
