Crystals of nickel(II) sulfate, NiSO4\text{NiSO}_4NiSO4​, can be prepared by reacting solid nickel(II) carbonate, NiCO3\text{NiCO}_3NiCO3​, with dilute sulfuric acid.

  • Stage 1: Place 60 cm360\text{ cm}^360 cm3 of dilute sulfuric acid into a beaker and warm.
  • Stage 2: Add the impure nickel(II) carbonate a little at a time and stir, until it is in excess.
  • Stage 3: Filter the mixture.
  • Stage 4: Heat the filtrate until the crystallisation point is reached.
  • Stage 5: Allow the filtrate to cool.
  • Stage 6: Filter off the crystals and dry with filter paper.
