Question 9

An antiseptic solution contains hydrogen peroxide (H2O2\text{H}_2\text{O}_2H2O2) as its active agent. A chemist wants to determine the percentage by mass of H2O2\text{H}_2\text{O}_2H2O2 in a commercial brand of this antiseptic.

She uses the following method:

  • Weighs a sample of the antiseptic solution.
  • Acidifies the solution with an excess of dilute sulfuric acid.
  • Titrates the mixture with standardized potassium permanganate solution, KMnO4\text{KMnO}_4KMnO4.

The table below shows her experimental results:

c.

Calculate the mass, in grams, of H2O2\text{H}_2\text{O}_2H2O2 in the antiseptic sample. [Mr of H2O2=34.0M_{\text{r}}\text{ of H}_2\text{O}_2 = 34.0Mr of H2O2=34.0]
