Acids, alkalis and the pH scale

Acids, alkalis and the pH scale

Horizontal pH scale from 0 to 14 with strongly acidic, weakly acidic, neutral, weakly alkaline, and strongly alkaline regions labelled and universal indicator colours shown

An aqueous solution is one where a substance is dissolved in water. Acids and alkalis are defined in water because acids produce H+H^+H+ ions in aqueous solution, while alkalis produce OH−OH^-OH− ions.
