What selective breeding is

What selective breeding is

Flow chart of selective breeding showing variation in a population, choosing parents with desired inherited characteristics, breeding them, selecting the best offspring, and repeating over generations

Selective breeding is artificial selection: humans choose parents with useful inherited characteristics and breed them. Variation means individuals in a population are not all the same, so some are better suited to the breeder's goal.
