Question 4

Pollen grains must germinate and grow a pollen tube to transport male gametes to the ovule for fertilisation. In the laboratory, pollen grains can be germinated in vitro using a sucrose solution. If the sucrose concentration is too low, the pollen grains may burst due to osmotic pressure; if it is too high, plasmolysis prevents germination.

Design an investigation to find the optimal concentration of sucrose to maximise the percentage of pollen grains that germinate successfully.

Your answer should include experimental details and be written in full sentences.
