Transgenic Goats The microinjection of human genetic material into fertilized animal eggs allows the production of transgenic livestock. Goat eggs are fertilized in vitro and a human gene is microinjected into the pronucleus. These eggs develop into early-stage embryos, which are then surgically transferred into the uterus of surrogate mothers.

A transgenic goat named Gemma was successfully created to express human antithrombin in her milk. Antithrombin is a protein that prevents harmful blood clotting in humans. When she matured, Gemma was bred with a normal, non-transgenic male goat. She gave birth to a litter of 8 offspring, of which 6 successfully inherited the transgene and the ability to produce antithrombin in their milk.
