She grows lettuce plants in a vertical farming facility:

  • fifteen plants are grown using an aeroponic misting system (roots suspended in air and misted with nutrient solution)
  • fifteen plants are grown using a deep water culture (DWC) system (roots completely submerged in aerated nutrient solution)
  • fifteen plants are grown using a drip irrigation system (nutrient solution dripped onto a rockwool substrate)

After five weeks, the grower harvests the shoots from each plant, dries them to find their dry mass, and calculates the mean shoot dry mass of lettuce per system.
