In an investigation into the role of auxin in phototropism, the effect of an auxin-transport inhibitor, naphthylphthalamic acid (NPA), on the phototropic curvature of oat coleoptiles was studied. Ten control coleoptiles were treated with distilled water, and ten treated coleoptiles were treated with NPA. All coleoptiles were exposed to unidirectional light from one side for 6 hours. The angle of curvature towards the light (measured in degrees) was recorded for each coleoptile.
