A student wanted to investigate the effect of caffeine on heart rate. She decided to study this effect using a small aquatic invertebrate called Daphnia magna.

  • She placed a Daphnia on a microscope slide in a drop of pond water.
  • She observed the Daphnia under low power and counted the number of heartbeats in 20 seconds.
  • She repeated this procedure for 10 individual Daphnia.
  • She then repeated the experiment using another 10 Daphnia in a 0.1% caffeine solution.
