Because plant cells often retain totipotency, small samples of tissue—known as explants—can be harvested from a donor Madagascar Periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus). These explants are carefully surface-sterilised to eliminate any biological contaminants before being transferred onto an aseptic agar medium. This medium is enriched with sucrose, essential inorganic ions, vitamins, and specific plant growth regulators.

Since all regenerated plantlets are derived via mitosis from a single high-yielding parent plant, they are genetically identical. Maintaining sterile conditions during this process ensures that the resulting stock is entirely pathogen-free.

The primary pharmaceutical value of Catharanthus roseus lies in the extraction of vinblastine and vincristine, which are critical chemotherapeutic agents used in treating leukemia and Hodgkin's lymphoma. Historically, sourcing these compounds required harvesting massive quantities of wild periwinkle leaves; because the yield of active alkaloids is extremely low, vast wild populations in Madagascar were unsustainably harvested, contributing to habitat loss.

Employing micropropagation to mass-produce these plants under controlled glasshouse conditions provides a reliable, sustainable source of these drugs. This relieves exploitation pressure on vulnerable tropical forest ecosystems. However, when these rich wild habitats are cleared for agriculture or logging, the resulting deforestation triggers severe global and local environmental consequences.
